Archive for Shopping

Over the last 28 years that we have been in business, many times, our customers have asked us what they should look for when they hire not only a garage door company, but other contractors in the building trades. As a result I put together a 7 point list that I believe can be useful to the average homeowner. Although it is worded specifically for the garage door industry, the points that it covers can be adapted to most service organizations.

1. Is the company properly licensed in your state to do business?
2. Is the company properly insured with both liability and workers compensation insurance?
3. Only hire a certified firm. Are the technicians professionally trained and certified?
4. Does the company use the highest quality parts available, backed by a long term replacement policy? Do they have a guarantee – in writing? Is it clear how they will remedy the situation if you are not completely satisfied? (Many companies have a “Concrete Warranty”. Once they leave your concrete driveway, the warranty expires.)
5. Price shopping is part of business. If you are looking for a “cheap” door, you can find it. The problem is that you will pay more for it in different ways. The old saying, “you get what you pay for” is never more true than in the garage door business.
6. There are 2 prices you pay for any product or service. The 1st is the price you paid at the time of purchase. The 2nd is the amount that you spent to use the product or service. This can include the cost of repair or replacement of a product or service that was inferior, or was not installed correctly. These 2 prices added together are really your “total cost”. You must also consider the value of your time in this equation. Abel Garage Door may be a little more expensive at the time of purchase, But our customers find that their total cost is actually less than our competitors. That makes us the best overall value.
7. Are the technicians prepared to complete the work? Our trucks are fully stocked so you don’t have to wait on parts. Our professional courteous, and technicians will fix your door right-the first time.

Two things to know when choosing a garage door opener.

Commercial or DIY(Do It Yourself)

Sounds simple, but what we are really talking about is quality. If you are looking for a long lasting garage door opener you immediately limit your choices in Sacramento. Why? Because you are not going to find one at your local hardware or big box store.

Sure there are great DIY models available, and frankly, most garage door companies will tell you either to pick one up at Home Depot or Lowes and they will install it. Or, they’ll just go ahead and purchase one from one of these stores and install it for you.

Abel Garage Door is different! We only sell commercial grade, professional quality garage door openers. Why? Because we back all of our work and we hate call backs. If you’re on a tight budget, we will help you to select the best value garage door opener from one of the big box stores and we will install it for you, while saving you money.

Here are a couple of things to look for when shopping for a garage door opener:

Quiet Functions
Chain-driven openers make more noise than the belt-driven ones. Since you are already willing to invest in this technology, why not go all out and go for belt-driven ones. The price difference is not really that great. Also, there are some integrated with durable belts to help it function for long years.

Can Detect Obstruction
It depends on how it can do it but it basically needs to detect if it is about to crash into something. Garage doors are heavy so it can cause problems and mishaps when it does not have a sensor. Companies use light beams to detect if something is obstructing its way and immediately opens up again.

½ Horsepower Or More
This motor power can typically hold average garage doors. Some still need to have a separate tool kit in order for it to work seamlessly on heavier doors. But basically, one integrated with this horsepower is already ideal as it is.

Keyless Wireless Pad
If you want total convenience, you have to get one with a keyless wireless pad. The good news is, there are lots of companies that offer wireless pads that can receive transmission from your garage even if it is made by a different manufacturing company.

Pick someone that is keyless and can let you change your code frequently so there would be no problem with radio scanner interference that may leak your code to burglars.

And if you need our input, feel free to give us a call, or send us an email, and we’ll get back to you ASAP.
